Europa League: Gunners, Napoli ease through

Arsenal secured their spot in the UEFA Europa League last 16 while Napoli made light work of FC Zurich in Thursday’s early Europa League encounters.

Napoli 2-0 Zurich

Napoli eased into the round of 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Zurch in the league.

After winning the first leg 3-1 in Zurich, goals from Simone Verdi and Adam Ounas gave Carlo Ancelotti’s a 2-0 win on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.

Arsenal 3-0 BATE

Arsenal overturned their 1-0 first-leg loss to defeat BATE Borisov 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were ahead after just four minutes when Zakhar Volkov deflected the ball into his own net.

The lead was doubled six minutes before the break, with Shkodran Mustafi turning home a cross from Granit Xhaka as Arsenal went up 2-1 up on aggregate.

Second-half substitute Sokratis Papastathopoulos bagged the third goal on the night with a towering header on the hour mark as the Gunners claimed a 3-1 aggregate win.

Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 Viktoria Plzen

Dinazmo Zagreb made light work of Viktoria Plzen to advance to the last 16 of the competition.

Zagreb entered the tie trailing 2-1 on aggregate, but they levelled things up when Mislav Orsic fired home after eight minutes.

Emir Dilaver and Bruno Petkovic got the second and third goals respectively for the hosts, who ran out 4-2 aggregate winners.

Salzburg 4-0 Club Brugge

Red Bull Salzburg put on a commanding display in the second leg to thump Club Brugge and advance to the round of 16.

Patson Daka netted a brace while Xaver Schlager and Moanes Dabour also got on the score-sheet for the hosts to make it 5-2 on aggregate.

Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Eintracht Frankfurt advanced to the next round with a 6-3 aggregate win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Luka Jovic, a brace from Sebastian Haller and late strike from Ante Rebic did the damage for the Bundesliga outfit in the 4-1 second-leg triumph, while Junior Moraes netted a consolation for the hosts.

Valencia 1-0 Celtic

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic were dumped out of the competition after losing 1-0 in the second leg at the Mestalla.

Celtic had lost the first leg 2-0, before Kevin Gameiro’s 70th minute strike condemned the Scottish champions to a second-leg defeat.

Zenit 3-1 Fernerbahce

Zenit St Petersburg overturned a first-leg 1-0 loss to defeat Fenerbahce 3-1 at the Saint-Petersburg Stadium.

Sardar Azmoun and Magomed Ozdoyev put the home side 2-0 up before Mehmet Topal pulled one back for the Turks to level mattes in the tie.

However, Azmoun completed his brace in the 76th minute to restore Zenit’s two-goal advantage and make it 3-2 on aggregate.

Villarreal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon

Villarreal booked their spot in the round of 16, despite drawing 1-1 at home in the second leg.

The LaLiga outfit had won the first leg 1-0, but they fell behind in the second leg through Bruno Fernandes’ first-half strike.
